Nature and People at

Isla de la Juventud

It takes place in the southwest of the Cuban mainland and is the biggest island of "Archipiélago de Cannareos". There are living nearly 70.000 habitants, half of them at Nueva Gerona.
The island is the best place in Cuba for people who want to escape from crowded tourist zones. It has fantastic landscapes, spendid beaches, historical buildings, nature reservates and one of the worlds famoust diving area.
The immigration history and the presence of tousands foreign students have formed the open minded character of people, called Pineros. And there´s a great szene of artists and paintors.
It hase the bigest reserve on marble in Cuba and has a long tradition in his preparation to art and industrial products.

The island has an extension of 3050 qkm and is a mostly flat area with a hilly central core. Around Nueva Gerona are situated the mountains Sierra de Caballo and Sierra de Casa with an altitude about 280 and 233 meters. The rest of northern part is an ideal area for fruit cultivations like bananas, grapefruit, mango, coco and citrus.
The southern part has a limestone ground with bush- and marshland what is homeland for a big number of alligators, wild pigs, ducks and other waterbirds. The southern zone is limited by very nice and quiet beaches with splendid white sand.
