Trips in Nature at

Isla de la Juventud

One of the most interesting destinations is to climb on one of the rainforest covered marble hills besides Gerona
Use the morning when sun is not so strong. The best hill to climb you find when going the 22th street to western side straight to the end. There you go to the right, when you see a little way to the mountain after 200 meters go it to the left. Climbing will take between 20 and 60 minutes according to your condition, anyway you should have good shoes for the last part. On the top you will have a great view on Gerona and the sea.

At the beginning of the way you will see an entrance to a cave. Its interesting to go downstairs, there will wait you an underground river with warm water. But be carefull, carry a strong light and if possible a person who knows the cave and think about the stairs will end at about 100 meters inside !

At the mountains "Sierra del Casa" southwest of Nueva Gerona you´ll find another three interesting caves, Cueva el Agua, Cueva El Indio and Cueva del Hondón. It´s worth a visit because of the nice stalagmites und stalagtites and some prehistorical indian paintures at the walls.
Besides you can visit a marble querry.
And if you want to give the trip the right atmosphere we recommend you to do it by horseback riding.

South of Nueva Gerona you will pass some kilometers through forests and fruit plantations and come to a valley with romantic little rivers inside the forests, that end in nice lakes. where you can have a piknic.

The bay "Bahía de Siguanea" not only offers phantastic views under water, but also much adventures for nature lovers. There is an very sensitiv ecosystem with palm- and pineforests, bush- and marshland and protects more than 60 endemic plants and 152 types of birds like parrots.
The protected nature reservate you can reach by boat excursion from Colony or landsite by driving the road coming from La Victoria. If you are interested in the endemic species it always would be good to be escorted by a local biologist.
