Zona Sur (die Südzone)

Isla de la Juventud

The part southern of Cayo Piedra, is a military Zone. You will need a permission to go in. But it´s easy to get it at the tourist office inside Villa Gaviota, at Havanauto car rental or at MININT (calle 16 at the harbor).

The region is coverd by bush- and marchland and very popular by hunters searching ducks and wild pigs. Special hunting excursions are offered by the tourist offices at Villa Gaviota and Hotel Colony.

The southcoast is limited by splendid white sand beaches turkese water, but you have to bring your own food, there is no lodging or restaurant.

Cueva Punta del Este:
This point eastside of Cayo Piedra has also a phantastic quiet beach, but the main attraction is the cave with the most impressionend indian paintures at walls and roof. They have an age of about 2800 years and represent the indian calendar.

Driving along the coast you will find little farmers and fishermen who are descendence of immigrants from Cayman Islands and up today they speek a typical carribean english.

At Caleta Grande it´s a must see to stay at the turtle research and creation center.
